Best Top Entry Litter Box Reviews (Updated List)

1 IRIS Top Entry Cat Litter Box

IRIS Top Entry Cat Litter BoxIris Top Entry Cat Litter Box offers plenty of room for your cat to comfortably move and dig around while preventing it from making a mess. It has a large hole in the top for easy entrance and a grooved lid which works as a built-in mat to collect the litter stuck on your cat’s paws as it goes out.

Iris Top Entry Cat Litter Box has a unique rounded shape. It does not even look like a cat litter box and is spacious enough even for a large cat. Moreover, it features a scoop hook for easy storage of the scoop that comes with the box for easy cleanup. Furthermore, it has non-skid rubber feet to keep it in place as your cat jumps in and out.

Iris Top Entry Cat Litter Box is available in multiple colors but my favorite is the white/beige. One thing I would like to point out about this box is that it is quite high and your cat will have to jump on it to enter. So, if your cat has any hip injuries or if it is quite an old cat, it may not be the best solution for you. Moreover, some users with overweight cats have complained that the lid broke after a few weeks.

Key features:

  • Measures 20.5 x 16.1 x 14.6 inches.
  • Unique round shape, easy on the eye.
  • Grooved lid works as a built-in litter mat.
  • It comes with a scoop and a scoop hook.
  • Non-skid rubber feet.

One common thing some users point out about this litter box is that the base of the pan is not flat. There is a groove close to one edge and it sometimes makes cleaning that area difficult. The box is compatible with Petmate Top Entry Litter Pan Liners which make cleaning it up extremely easy but if you are not willing to use liners, this may not be the best option for you.

3 Clevercat Top Entry Litterbox

Clevercat Top Entry LitterboxClevercat Top Entry Litterbox is a great choice for cats who love digging and kicking litter. It almost eliminates tracking completely and prevents edge spills. Plus, it reduces odor. It measures 20” x 15” x 15” with a 9” diameter entry. Since it has quite high walls, Clevercat Top Entry Litterbox is not recommended for disabled or elderly cats.

For easy cleaning, you can use Clevercat Custom Heavy-Duty Liners with it but it is optional. If you wish you can use it without any liners. It is pretty simple to clean up even without the liners thanks to its smooth surface at the bottom of the pan. The lid of the box has zigzag grooves on it to reduce tracking. It is almost dog proof but still, some persistent dog might manage to pop the lid off or topple it over. It is not the best option for larger cats, as well.

Key features:

  • Measures 20” x 15” x 15”.
  • 9” diameter top entry.
  • Reduces odor.
  • Compatible with Clevercat Custom Heavy-Duty Liners.
  • Dog-proof.

AmazonBasics Hooded Cat Litter BoxAmazonbasics Hooded Cat Litter Box is made of heavy-duty and non-porous plastic. It helps to keep your floors clean of stray litter while giving your cat some privacy and keeping other curious pets away.

Measuring 20.1 x 15.4 x 15 inches, it has a spacious interior, large enough to accommodate even larger cats. Its top opening is also quite wide, fit for kitties of all sizes.

As well as the snap-on top makes it easier to clean the litter box, there is a big indent in the back that creates 2 crevices. Unfortunately, it is quite difficult to clean around these crevices. I believe that is the only handicap worth mentioning about this litter box. Other than that it is perfect, especially for spraying cats.

Favorite Top Entry Hooded Cat Litter BoxFavorite Top Entry Hooded Cat Litter Box is an environment-friendly box made of high-density polyethylene material. It has an elegant streamline shape which makes it look very modern. At the same time, the paw shape on its top makes it look very cute.

Favorite Top Entry Hooded Cat Litter Box has a classic lock design which is very easy to assemble and disassemble. You can easily remove the top part when it is cleanup time. However, I do not recommend this design for sprayers because litter boxes without seams in the middle are more effective for preventing leaks caused by side-peers. What Are the Benefits of a Top Entry Litter Box?

  • Top Entry Cat Litter Box ReviewsThey are certainly less messy. Their high sides prevent litter from getting kicked out of the box and tracking. Therefore, there is less stray litter around. Again, due to their high walls, they prevent leaks to a great extent, as well.
  • Clumping litter works great with them. Clumping cat litters are supposed to absorb all liquids before they reach the bottom of the litter box and form clumps before it gets all sludgy at the bottom. Since top entry litter boxes are deep with high sides, they allow you to pour in the litter to a higher level, making it difficult for liquids to sink to the bottom before getting absorbed.
  • Since the litter inside is deeper when compared to a regular litter box, there will be fewer scratches at the bottom of the litter box because your cat will have plenty of litter to dig until it reaches to the bottom.
  • They are very good at inhibiting odors. In that respect, they are very much alike with hooded litter boxes. Closed sides are very good at trapping odors and if you use a litter for odor control, your smelly litter box problem will be solved.
  • Most of the time, they look less like litter boxes than regular ones. Some look like office wastebaskets while some of them can even be mistaken for decorative objects.
  • They have easy mobility because there is no risk of litter spilling unless you tip the box over. Therefore, you can easily move it from one place to another.
  • They are perfect for houses with other pets, especially dogs, or babies. Your curious dog will not be able to fit in to play in the sand and your baby will not even notice what is inside and will not be able to reach in.

Do Cats Like Top Entry Litter Boxes?

Cats do like their routine and mostly hate to deviate from it. However, over time and some patience, you can get them used to some small changes. If your cat has been using a regular litter box all its life, it may refuse to use a different one at first. Do not immediately mistake this for dislike. Your cat might be just cautious about this new object because cats are skeptical animals, too.

Unless your cat has a physical hindrance like old age or arthritis which makes it difficult to jump onto the box, it is very likely that it will come to love its new box soon.  The main reason for this is that a top entry litter box provides privacy to your cat which cannot be compared to any other litter box and cats worship their privacy. Furthermore, mostly it is possible to pour more litter into a top entry litter box and your cat will also love having more litter to dig in.

How to Choose a Top Entry Cat Litter Box?

1. Size

How To Choose A Top Entry Cat Litter BoxInside of a top entry cat litter box should again allow for your cat to turn around, dig, bend and stretch inside comfortably just like a regular box. What you should specifically pay attention to is the size of the entry and the height of the box. The diameter of the top opening should be wide enough for your cat to easily go in. It should not have to struggle to fit through because in that case apart from the physical effort, it is very likely that it will feel trapped inside and be afraid of not being able to go back out. This may deter your cat from using the litter box and all of a sudden it may decide to poo on the bathroom floor instead.

The height of the box also matters because remember that your cat will have to jump onto the box several times a day to go in and out. It should be of a height that your cat can easily jump. Especially if your cat is too old or physically handicapped a high top entry litter box will be a big challenge for it. Kittens which are not grown to their full size may also have similar problems.

Again, this may result in your cat’s toilet habits getting out of order and you do not want that.

2. Stray Litter

Is your main reason for wanting to switch to a top entry litter box the stray litter? If the answer is yes, get something that further prevents tracking. Most top entry litter boxes have specially textured roofs that collect the stray litter stuck on your cat’s paws. They are so effective that you will not even need to use a litter mat and will save both some money and space. I am not even mentioning the time spent on vacuuming the floors. Moreover, you can easily throw the litter collected up on the roof back into the box and save on litter too.

3. Safety

Look for a box that is not likely to topple over when your cat jumps on it. Since you are going to fill a good portion of it with litter, the base will probably be stable enough but still, make sure that the base is wide enough to stand its ground when your cat jumps on it. It should not also slide on the floor with the force of your cat’s jumps and for that, some boxes have rubber bottoms that increase friction and avoid slipping.

Furthermore, make sure that the litter box is not made of flimsy material because your 18lb cat will jump on it. You would not want the plastic to crack, leading to an unpleasant accident.

In addition to how sturdy and stable the box is, it is important that its roof is slip-free. Cats are incredibly agile creatures but they can be clumsy from time to time, falling off from places. Falling off from the top of its litter box may scare your cat away and it may refuse to use it again. Therefore, try to choose a box with a roof that is slip-free.

4. Your Cat’s Habits

Does your cat pee on the sides of its litter box or is your cat a sprayer? If the answer is yes, choose a seamless box. Some top entry litter boxes also have seams in the middle like a regular closed litter box, while others only have lids on the top but no middle seams. The seamless ones are perfect at preventing any leakages. Therefore, I highly recommend them for sprayers. They are a bit more difficult to clean up but remember that cleaning leaked pee from the floor is more difficult.

5. Cleanup

Top entry litter boxes might be a bit more difficult to clean up because they are a bit higher than regular boxes and most of the time you have to reach in a long way from the top to clean them. There are top entry litter boxes that assemble and disassemble from the middle, though. These are like regular locking hooded litter boxes but as much as they are easier to clean once the top part is removed, I do not recommend them to cats that pee on sides because the seam in the middle may lead to leaks.

How to Get Your Cat to Use a Top Entry Litter Box?

How To Get Your Cat To Use A Top Entry Litter BoxIf your cat has been using a regular cat litter box all its life and you want to change to a top entry litter box, here are some tips to make the transition less painful;

  • Put the new litter box right next to the old one.
  • Let your cat sniff around the new box and explore. Gently show it where the entrance is if it does not jump on it to discover for itself. No matter what, do not force your cat to get in because if it gets scared, it may even refuse to go near it again.
  • Transfer some litter from your cat’s old litter box to the new one so that your cat will recognize the smell and find it safer to approach.
  • Keep the new box spotless clean while allowing the old box to get dirty each and every day. Neglect cleaning the old box on purpose. Cats like it when the litter box is clean and fresh so it will start preferring to use the new and clean one.
  • When your cat uses the new litter box, give it a treat but do not give any treats when it uses the old one.
  • When your cat completely starts using the new box and ignoring the old one, get the old one out of sight for good.
  • Enjoy your new top entry litter box!

How to Train Your Cat to Use the Litter Box?

  • If you have enough space, get more than one litter box. Having alternatives will be good for your cat.
  • Once you have decided that you got the right litter box, find a good place for it. Make it conveniently accessible but meanwhile, it should not be close to its food and water. Plus, your cat will want some privacy while doing its business so place it somewhere quiet and peaceful, somewhere your cat will not get disturbed by members of the household.
  •  Choose a litter that your cat likes. For example, if your cat does not like scented litters, choose something odorless and pour enough of it (something between two to four inches) into the litter box.
  • Learn your cat’s toilet schedule. Most cats visit the litter box right after they have eaten or taken a nap. Observe your cat and find out the schedule. If you find out that your cat is heading for the carpet instead of the litter box, you can lead it to the litter box.
  • Show your cat what to do. For example, take it near the litter box and dig in with your finger. Try to gently put your cat’s paw onto the litter as well but do not force it. If your cat does not cover its waste afterward, again put some litter onto the waste with your finger when your cat is watching. Remember to wash your hands thoroughly afterward.
  •  If your cat eliminates outside the litter box, instead of throwing the poop away, put it into the litter box so that your cat will recognize the smell later and will remember the litter box.
  • Daily clean the litter box and monthly change the litter completely. When it is time for a litter change, wash the litter box with mild soap and rinse it before reusing it.

Why Is My Cat Not Using the Litter Box?

Best Top Entry Cat Litter BoxesRemember that your cat is not avoiding the litter box to annoy you. While most reasons for litter box avoidance is stress-related, some even might be health-related and yelling at your cat or punishing will not do you or your cat any good other than getting it even more stressed.

  • Rule out medical problems. If your cat is not eliminating in the litter box, is it eliminating at all? Urethral obstruction might be the issue and if you suspect that your cat is not eliminating at all take it to a vet immediately. Some cats with urinary tract infections tend to pee on tiles because they look for cool and smooth surfaces. Look for blood in your cat’s urine to make sure. Also, observe for any vomit or diarrhea. In all these cases, visit your vet asap.
  • If you have multiple cats, they may not want to share and there may not be enough litter boxes. The key number for litter boxes is the number of cats plus one. You may also want to check my post on litter boxes for multiple/big cats.
  • Your cat may not like the litter box itself. If you are using a hooded one try something unhooded for example. Or it may be too small for your cat, get a bigger one.
  • Your cat may not like the type of litter you are using. Try changing the type of litter. In my cheapest cat litter reviews, you may find some budget-friendly options.
  • Your cat maybe does not like the location of the litter box. Try to move it somewhere else, somewhere more accessible or more private maybe, depending on its current location.
  • Maybe your cat does not find the litter box clean enough. If you do not clean it daily, start cleaning every day and if you are already cleaning daily, make it twice a day. If you cannot keep to a cleaning schedule, consider getting an automatic/self-cleaning litter box. Clean the other areas that your cat pees and poops on thoroughly, as well. Use enzyme-based cleaners to eliminate urine and fecal odors so that your cat will not smell them next time.
  • If there is a specific problem area, try to keep your cat away from it by closing the door to that room or cover the area with unpleasant textures such as aluminum foil which your cat hates. Another option is to use a cat repellent. Also, cats do not want to eliminate close to their food and water. You can try moving its food and water to the problem area.
  • Temporary confinement may also work. Put your cat in a room with the litter box in one corner, food, water and bed in the other. Close the door of the room until your cat uses the litter box.
