5 Best Dust Free Cat Litters – (Reviews & Buying Guide 2020)

As a cat mother, I personally think that dust-free clumping cat litters are lifesavers. Before starting to use them, I hated all that litter sticking under our feet and spreading into every room in the house and all that dust that flew around getting into every hole each time I added some litter into the litter box. Every day was a vacuum day. Well, with one cat and one dog in the house and all that fur every day still is vacuum day but at least the litter is out of the way. However, all clumping cat litter is unfortunately not clumping and is not dust free. I have reviewed and listed the best dust free cat litters on the market. Here we go with my dust-free cat litter reviews;

Reviews of Best Dust Free Cat Litters (Updated List)

1 Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Platinum Litter

Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal Platinum LitterArm & Hammer Clump & Seal Platinum litter is a 100% dust-free formula. They use particles derived from plants and these particles clump together very strongly. They prevent your cat from tracking the contents of the litter box as well as making it extremely easy to scoop up when it is litter box cleaning time. In addition, Arm & Hammer Platinum Litter contains micro-granules that are activated by moisture and that form a seal around cat waste. Plus, they use Arm & Hammer Baking Soda and some other heavy-duty odor eliminators to get rid of the unwanted smell.

In fact, Arm& Hammer trusts its product so much that they guarantee 7-day odor-free homes. Most users seem to agree on rock-hard clumps so if you are sensitive about both cat litter tracking and odor, this product might be your best option. The product is available in two sizes like a 27.5-pound package and a 40-pound package and is fit for houses with multiple cats. You can confidently use it in a litter box for multiple cats.

Key features:

  • 100% dust-free Platinum formula
  • 7-day odor-free home
  • Rock hard clumps.

2 World’s Best Cat Litter Clumping Formula

World's Best Cat Litter Clumping FormulaAs the name suggests, World’s Best Litter has a lot of trust in its clumping formula. This is a 99% dust-free cat litter which forms tight clumps only in seconds. It is also good at odor control. One thing I would like to point at is that this cat litter is corn-based. It means that it may look different from what you have been using. However, being corn-based makes this cat litter flushable! You can easily scoop it up, thanks to strong clumping, and flush it down the toilet, it is totally septic safe. So you will not need to collect all cat litter in your trash.

One setback of the ingredients of this litter is that they may get infested with grain mites. Keep the unused portion tightly sealed in a dark and cool place and you will be fine, though. It is available in 3 sizes like 7-pound, 14-pound, and 28-pound bags.

Key features:

  • 99% dust-free.
  • Tight clumps.
  • Corn-based formula.
  • Flushable.

Is Litter Dust Bad for Cats?

Dust Free Cat Litter ReviewsThe answer is yes and it is not only bad for your cat but for you as well. When you pour litter into your cat’s litter box if a dust cloud is formed around you, this means that you have a litter dust problem. The dust cloud will not stay where it is of course and settle in almost everywhere and no matter how often you clean you will not be able to get rid of it completely and this will drive you crazy. It will stick on your cat’s feet and will even end up on your bed. Other than having to live in a dusty house and some mental issues that come with not being able to get rid of the dust, you and your cat might experience some serious health issues.

Cat litter dust in long term use can lead to respiratory issues. It can cause coughing, irritation, and wheezing. Many cat litters contain silica dust and it is closely associated with upper respiratory issues both in cats and humans. In case you, one of the other family members or your cat suffers from asthma, litter dust can worsen the situation. In addition to the health issues caused by litter dust inhalation, litter dust can cause allergies as well. The majority of the dust-free cat litters are clumping litters and they mostly contain sodium bentonite. When your cat uses the litter box, dust containing sodium bentonite will stick on its paws and body. When your cat grooms itself, it will consume this chemical and its consumption can lead to gastrointestinal distress. Furthermore, you can get a disease called toxoplasmosis from inhaling contaminated litter dust. In short, low dust cat litter is better both for your health and your cat’s health.

Dust Free Cat Litter Buying Guide

The amount of dust produced by cat litter mostly depends on the type of litter. Therefore, here are my analysis through types of cat litter;

1. Pellet Litter

Pellet litter is perfect for those who are looking for a 100% dust-free litter. They are wood pellets, made of pine for example, which turn into sawdust when they absorb urine. They have a porous structure and are very absorbent. However, there is a major setback in using them. Cats prefer soft and fine to the touch litters instead of hard pellets so it might be really difficult to train your cat to use pellet litter. If your cat is declawed, pellet litter may not be a good idea at all because pellets may hurt the paws of a declawed cat.

Moreover, since pellet litter turns into sawdust it is much more difficult to clean it up while clumping cat litters can easily be scooped away, leaving the litter box fresh and clean. With pellet litter, you will need to scoop the solid waste (feces) daily. Then you will need to gently shake the litter box so the unused pellets rise to the top and the sawdust sinks to the bottom. Do not take away the sawdust in the box because it will keep absorbing moisture and odor. When the box is about 90% sawdust it is time to dispose of it and start with new litter.

2. Clay Litter

Clay is a dusty material by nature and therefore it is almost impossible to find a clay litter that is 100% dust-free. However, there are very good low dust formulas on the market. The advantage of clay is that it clumps very well which makes it incredibly easy to clean up and cats love the feeling of clay and specifically prefer it. Being the oldest type of commercial cat litter, they are still widely used.

3. Silica Gel Crystal Litter

Silica gel litter consists of large, solid granules of sodium silicate. It is less dusty than clay and is extremely easy to clean up. The silica gel crystals are very absorbent and all you have to do is to take away the solid waste and stir the rest daily. Replacing the litter once a month will most probably suffice. Due to their ease of cleaning, this type of cat litter is mostly preferred to be used with automatic litter boxes. Plus, silica gel is very lightweight. On the negative side, silica gel granules are quite rough and they make a crunchy sound when they rub against each other. Many cats like neither the feel nor the sound of it. Moreover, it is more expensive than other cat litter types.

3. Biodegradable Litter

The Best Dust Free Cat LittersMost biodegradable cat litters make more or less the same amount of dust as clay litter. They are made with recycled paper products or plant-derived materials like walnut, corn, grass and as such. They are absorbent, eco-friendly and most of the brands are septic safe which means that you can flush them down your toilet. Since they are biodegradable, they do not clutter landfills. The advantage they have over clay is that since their ingredients are natural, their ingestion is less likely to cause any harm to your cat. However, when using a corn-based litter, for example, you need to be careful about grain mites. Unless you keep the unused portion in a sealed bag and in a cool room, it may get infested with mites. Otherwise, it is a good low dust option.

Whichever cat litter you decide to use, a good cat litter mat may help to prevent the dust stuck on your kitty’s paws from further spreading. Also, a top entry litter box might also be helpful in protecting you from the dust as its high walls will keep the dust trapped. However, your kitty will still be subjected to it when inside the litter box.

Conclusion

If your cat coughs when it is inside the litter box, I strongly suggest that you change to a dust-free litter. Even if you and your cat do not have any respiratory issues, it is always a good idea to go with a low dust formula and be on the safe side. Getting rid of tracking and trailing will be its bonus. When changing to a dust-free litter, try to figure out which texture your cat will find enticing the most. If it likes fine and soft litter particles under its paws, you go on with clay but if it does not mind larger and coarser granules silica gel might be a good idea. If your cat would not mind a hard surface at all, you can use a pellet litter which is the least dusty option. Remember that the best dust-free cat litter is relevant to your cat’s taste.

Hopefully with the help of my dust-free cat litter reviews, after you find out the texture that your cat favors the most, you can compare other features such as odor control.
